After receiving his Medical Degree in 1977 from the University of Louvain in Belgium, Dr. Richard S. Wilkenfeld, M.D. completed his surgery internship and residency, and was selected Chief Surgical Resident at St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He then completed a fellowship in Vascular Surgery under Dr. Michael DeBakey at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston.

Dr. Wilkenfeld founded and was director of the Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory at Conroe Regional Medical Center and has served on and chaired most committees there, including Chairman of the Department of Surgery as well as an officer on the Medical Executive Committee. He has also served as Chief of Staff at Doctors Hospital, Conroe, as well as the Conroe Surgery Center, and as president of that partnership; and President of the Montgomery County Medical Society.

Awards include: Physician of the Year from the Montgomery County Cancer Society, Cattle Barons Association and the Ken Davis Award from the Conroe Family Practice Residency Program.

After learning of the health benefits associated with weight loss surgery Dr. Wilkenfeld formed Texas Gastric Bariatrics. He has undergone extensive training, including a Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical School, in Dallas.

He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgeons, and is an Associate Clinical Professor at UT Health Science Center Houston, for the Conroe Family Practice Residency Program.

Previously known as Texas Gastric Banding, we recently changed our name to reflect the wider range of services that we now offer. Performing Bariatric Surgery since 1983, we are constantly striving to offer the most up to date procedures. Our office is designed specifically for the care of our patients. With a comprehensive teaching provided for each procedure offered and our Tru-You® Aftercare Program, education will help our patients maximize their weight loss experience. We work with several exercise, nutritional, and psychological specialists. Quarterly educational workshops, monthly support groups, are also provided and these are free to our patients.

We perform inpatient as well as outpatient procedures, depending on the procedure offered and if you have had previous weight loss surgery or other major upper abdominal surgeries or have any significant medical problems. Procedures are offered in various outpatient surgery centers and hospitals.

Allergan is the manufacturer of the Lap Band. Dr Wilkenfeld is an Allergen Total Care Physician and has been invited to all the Allergan Total Care Forums since their inception. Our office has been used as a model for providing Bariatric surgery care. Plus, he is also the first physician in Montgomery County to be trained by Ethicon in placement and care of the Realize Band on its release.

We now offer not just adjustable gastric band surgery, but also Sleeve Gastrectomy and the newest procedure the Gastric Imbrication.
