FAQ about LAP-BAND® Surgery

Since I won’t be able to eat as much as I’m accustomed to eating, won’t I constantly feel hungry?

No. After the surgery, you’ll find yourself wanting to eat less and feeling full because your stomach will no longer be able to hold as much food as before, which will increase the time it takes for the food to travel through your digestive system. Of course, it is important for you to follow the guidelines you will be given regarding nutrition so that your appetite will be satisfied and you will not feel deprived. You will have to do your part toward meeting your weight loss goals, as the LAP-BAND® surgery is just part of the equation.

If I’m eating less, will I need to supplement my diet with vitamins?

Since your diet will change, sometimes drastically, it may be necessary to take vitamins, particularly vitamin B12, iron and folic acid. Calcium and Vitamin D are also recommended for women. We will be able to help assess whether or not your diet will suffice.

Will my medications need adjusting?

There could be a problem with pills getting stuck in your stoma (opening of the stomach where the band sits) and making you sick so you’ll need to check with your physician about adjusting your medications. While you’ll still need to take many, if not all, of your prescription meds, you may have to switch to opening capsules, break larger tablets into small pieces, or dissolve drugs in water. However, it’s important you do make any changes without first discussing them with your physician.

Will I still be able to enjoy an occasional alcoholic drink?

The key here is occasional. Alcohol breaks down vitamins and contains empty calories – something you want to avoid! However an occasional glass of wine or other drink will not affect your weight loss.

What happens if I get sick?

The LAP-BAND® can be adjusted, which is what gives it an advantage over other weight loss surgery options. Since some illnesses will require a higher calorie intake, we can loosen the band by removing saline, and tighten it again once you are ready to resume weight loss. In some cases, unfortunately, the band will have to be removed.

Is pregnancy possible?

Actually, you may find getting pregnant is easier than ever with the LAP-BAND® System, because your menstrual cycle will even out as you lose weight. Again, this is a situation where the band may simply be loosened throughout the pregnancy and tightened up once you’re ready to start losing again, if needed.

Will eating out be a thing of the past?

Absolutely not! Most restaurants offer great appetizers, children’s portions, or sharing meals. Order one and take your time with it so you can pace yourself with those you’re dining with who are eating full meals. If you’re going to someone’s home for a meal, just let your host know ahead of time that you won’t be eating a lot, so they won’t be offended thinking you don’t like what they’ve served!

How will my bowels be affected?

Occasionally constipation can be a problem due to the reduction in the amount of stool your body produces. If this should happen, please contact us at once.

What if I don’t lose weight?

No procedure is foolproof. Even though LAP-BAND® procedures are usually highly effective, there are cases in which they simply don’t work for certain individuals. There are a variety of reasons why this normally successful procedure does not always work. You may want to consider LAP-BAND® Revision surgery if one of the following has occurred:

1. Band slippage. Gradual slippage may be occurring. Or, on occasion, there can be one significant reason for the slippage which is considered a surgical emergency. By simply removing, repositioning, or replacing the band, this band slippage can be remedied. If the band must be removed, Gastric Sleeve or some other alternative weight loss surgery may be considered.
2. Band erosion. If weight loss is not occurring after a LAP-BAND® procedure, it could be due to the band wearing a hole in the stomach, which can also lead to further health problems. If band erosion is the cause of a failed Lap Band procedure, it must be removed. Again, in this case, other weight loss surgery options can be explored, such as Gastric Sleeve.
3. Band failure for no specific reason. Sometimes Lap Band procedures simply don’t work. This may be due to a patient not maintaining eating patterns which are necessary for LAP-BAND® success. Or they just don’t respond to this type of restrictive procedure. The good news is that Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass may be viable options.

FAQ about Revision Surgery

When do I consider revisional bariatric surgery?

There are two main reasons for revisional surgery:

1. Regaining weight (or poor weight loss) after bariatric surgery — Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass, Molina Band, non-adjustable band, stomach stapling.
2. Complications with the original procedure

Always, a proper evaluation must be done to understand why the original procedures are not working. Here are some of the more common solutions, though your specific procedure may be different:

Gastric Bypass — revision solution is typically an adjustable band.
Molina Band — revision solution is typically to remove the band and go with a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, or an adjustable gastric band as a second procedure. This is a multi-step procedure.
Stomach Stapling — revision solution is typically an in depth evaluation to determine the best approach for the future.

Is it common to regain weight after a bariatric operation?

Unfortunately, it is quite common to regain some weight after some time. The key is to control your weight and where applicable, modify eating habits to sustain a healthy weight. If weight control becomes a problem once again, then you should evaluate your situation with a qualified bariatric surgeon.

What can I expect after revision surgery?

If your revision is due to a complication, then the results are typically very good. This is because the complication has been resolved and the original intent of the surgery can being/continue. You should not expect weight loss after revision surgery to be as dramatic as the initial bariatric operation.

FAQ about Gastric
Sleeve Surgery

How long will I be in the hospital following a Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Generally, an overnight hospital stay is all that is needed.

How much weight can I expect to lose and how quickly will I lose it?

Weight results will vary according to a number of factors, including how much a patient weighs prior to surgery, and whether or not the necessary lifestyle and dietary changes are implemented. Generally, patients see a loss of about 50% of their excess body fat within the first year.

Will my insurance pay for this procedure?

Check with your insurance company, as some insurance plans do not cover Gastric Sleeve surgeries because they still consider them to be experimental.

How is a Sleeve Gastrectomy preferable to Gastric Bypass or Gastric Banding?

There are a few advantages to choosing Gastric Sleeve surgery over a Gastric bypass or LAP-BAND® surgery:

The risk of developing malnutrition or a vitamin deficiency with a Sleeve Gastrectomy is considerably lower than with a Gastric bypass because there is no malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins.
Risks involved are slightly lower with the Gastric Sleeve surgery versus a Gastric bypass, yet the results are similar.
Weight loss is much quicker following a Sleeve Gastrectomy than it is with LAP-BAND® surgery.
Nothing foreign is implanted with Gastric Sleeve surgery, so there no problem with slips or erosions, as may happen with the LAP-BAND® system.
