FAQ about Gastric Sleeve Surgery


How long will I be in the hospital following a Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Generally, an overnight hospital stay is all that is needed.

How much weight can I expect to lose and how quickly will I lose it?

Weight results will vary according to a number of factors, including how much a patient weighs prior to surgery, and whether or not the necessary lifestyle and dietary changes are implemented. Generally, patients see a loss of about 50% of their excess body fat within the first year.

Will my insurance pay for this procedure?

Check with your insurance company, as some insurance plans do not cover Gastric Sleeve surgeries because they still consider them to be experimental.

How is a Sleeve Gastrectomy preferable to Gastric Bypass or Gastric Banding?

There are a few advantages to choosing Gastric Sleeve surgery over a Gastric bypass or LAP-BAND® surgery:

• The risk of developing malnutrition or a vitamin deficiency with a Sleeve Gastrectomy is considerably lower than with a Gastric bypass because there is no malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins.
• Risks involved are slightly lower with the Gastric Sleeve surgery versus a Gastric bypass, yet the results are similar.
• Weight loss is much quicker following a Sleeve Gastrectomy than it is with LAP-BAND® surgery.
• Nothing foreign is implanted with Gastric Sleeve surgery, so there no problem with slips or erosions, as may happen with the LAP-BAND® system.
