Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Dr. Wilkenfeld specializes in the laparoscopic and open treatment of hernias with the use of surgical mesh, which is implanted and serves to strengthen the stomach wall. He does this by making several tiny incisions in the abdomen. Using the laparoscope that carries a video camera to the site, Dr. Wilkenfeld repairs the hernia while the patient is under general anesthesia.

You will need to meet with Dr. Wilkenfeld to determine the feasibility of a laparoscopic hernia repair. Your health and safety are his foremost concerns. If he surmises that you are a good candidate for this procedure, you can expect a relatively fast recovery time with minimal pain and very little scarring. As in the case with any hernia operation, there are restrictions related to heavy lifting for at least eight weeks following the surgery. However, other than lifting, you can resume your normal activities within days of the procedure and should feel fully recovered within four to six weeks.
