Placement of Portacaths for Chemotherapy

Often patients are told they need a portacath, but they go home not understanding exactly what that means. Simply put, a portacath is a tiny port that is medically inserted under your skin, usually about three inches below your left collarbone. The port is connected to a catheter which is placed in a large vein under the collarbone or neck.

The port serves a dual purpose:

1.	It delivers drugs into the vein by injection into the port
2.	It might be used for drawing blood samples, eliminating the necessity for multiple needles and punctures

This relatively simple procedure is done as an outpatient procedure, under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia and usually takes less than thirty minutes, with recovery time at about two hours.
